Behind the Leaves

Poem (Canso):

Driving down the road
or walking through the woods
you see trees
and you think
how lovely they are
how pretty;
how green, how yellow, how orange, how brown
they fill the air with color
as you pass them by.
you never think,
because you are who you are
of what's behind them
of what hides behind the leaves.
there could be
-a pasture full of cows
-an old barn
-a junkyard
-broken buildings full of mystery
-an old lean-to used centuries ago
-a waterfall
-an old hiding place
-a treasure chest
one thing's for sure.
you never really know
what you're going to find
behind something that looks
so peaceful and pretty on the surface.
behind the leaves.
